One of the many locals off the coast in Kaikoura. I was humbled by these friendly creatures and they way they were so eager to interact with us, particularly when we were in the water swimming with them. @christchurchnz @destination_kaikoura

Gliding across the sea in the dark, anticipation builds as the pre-dawn light burns like embers on the horizon. Near or far, these moments feel like home. @destination_kaikoura @christchurchnz @dolphinencounterkaikoura

I've had a pretty easy life. I feel provided for in every way, without need or want. I know this is far from the truth for many, if not the majority. So, if you're struggling, fighting, hurting or yearning - do not give up. There is hope. Always.

So my mate Cameron and I have just launched our own photography podcast 'shoot first, questions later'. Basically it's a weekly catch up where we will answer listener questions, discuss upcoming projects and photos, talk about 'rules' of photography and how to break them as well as sharing stories from the road and having guest interviews. Episodes 1 and 2 are now up on iTunes, spreaker, YouTube or you can download and listen on my blog (link in bio). Thanks for checking it out! #nofilter #nomakeup

Looking at these mountains, you reminded me that some of the most beautiful things are born from affliction. So when these hours of darkness come, I'll await with hope that light that always finds a way.

A new image from a recent trip back to the Budawangs with my friend and fellow photographer/hiker @crispy_scapes. This was our third trip to the national park and very reminiscent of our previous treks with scorching summer heat, scratched up legs and some of Australia’s finest mountain and wilderness views. Summiting the Castle and Mt Nibelung on our last visits, we headed further north this time and ascended the ‘Shrouded God’s’ mountain. After a failed attempt on day 1 we ended up admitting defeat and sleeping inside a cave just a few mere vertical metres below the summit. With the protective shade from the cave, we both managed the one of the biggest sleeps we’ve had in years, waking refreshed and determined to make it to the top. We eventually made it up and were welcomed by much grander views than below. The thick scrub still made it difficult to traverse as far east as I would’ve liked so we made it as far as we could and set up camp tucked away in a cosy corner of scrub. The weather fluctuated quite a bit through the next 24 hours and by sunset things moved very fast. Within an hour the sky went from 100% clear to visibility being reduced to just a few feet in front of us. Fortunately it was quite atmospheric and I managed to capture one image I liked just as the last light of day ignited the western face of the iconic Castle.

'All Is Not Lost' - you might remember the video of this a few months back. I had posted it here but Instagram algorithm throttled it to be my least viewed image in almost a year, so I thought I'd post again as it is a personal fave. I'll admit, the intensity of this moment is truly lost here, nothing will compare to the violent sound of the thunder echoing off the cave interior, the wind gusts throwing rain onto my face and camera and of course the sudden 2 minute window when this rainbow emerged as well as the two bolts. The rainbow did indeed stretch across the whole sky however I was already set up and shooting long exposures so I only caught the tail edge. Moving the camera would have resulted in missing the bolts which happened one after the other within 60 seconds or so. As chaotic and violent as this afternoon was, I felt a strong sense of peace and comfort here, something I've experienced a few times now and will continue to pursue. I'm not sure how much new work I'll release this year as I'm becoming more critical but hopefully some more of these moments arise.

Today my daughter Aurora Jade Patino came into the world. Named after the most beautiful sight my eyes have seen, the enchanting northern lights. Although the name was chosen months ago, Facebook reminded me today that it was actually this exact same date 3 years ago when I sat under the lights for the very first time in Canada. So proud of you @reneepatino and so grateful for this moment.

This image was captured on my first sunrise here as I attempted to climb one of the smaller peaks. My progress was slowed by clambering up boulders through waist, to chest-high scrub (something I had certainly not planned for). In typical Fiordland fashion, a low front began to move in from the south west so I swallowed my pride and headed back down before I was engulfed in rain for a few hours. To give some idea of scale, the tarn below is about 1.5 football fields in length.

I love the unpredictability of the ocean, it's restless motion and mood present such a powerful subject to shoot. Being by the waters edge at dawn inevitably reminds me of when I first picked up a camera some 5 years ago now. I was a different man back then, struggling internally to be honest. I truly wouldn't be who I am today without photography, perhaps that's why I love it so much, why I love being alone amidst the elements, wherever that may be. I've met some great people along the way, some of which I shared this particular morning with. It was enjoyable one with much laughter as we were battered by the waves. I didn't say it at the time but I was trying to capture an image that told a story, one of a man who was set free. Darkness encloses but light finds a way.

After looking at maps for months, I decided on this remote lake and surrounding mountains in the wilderness of New Zealand for a solo exhibition. Just a few hours before being dropped into the area by chopper, I had to make the tough decision to bring my pick up date forward due to a newly developing low front that was coming in from the south, bringing with it a week of solid rain. Although slightly discouraged, I was optimistic about the upcoming days and the unforeseen opportunities that still awaited. Completely alone and many, many miles from civilisation, I immediately felt a deep connection with the land around me unlike ever before. Upon being dropped off, as the hum of the chopper finally faded, I was greeted by the sound of water diving from a nearby mountain. No map could have prepared me for how pristine and rugged the area was, something that certainly made traversing more difficult yet equally rewarding. Being here, I was finally able to put aside any prior ideas and just let the place speak to me and see where I was led. Coming across this small river, I decided to follow it in the hopes of it opening up toward the mountains. The surrounding marsh was wet and muddy but finally after a couple of kilometres I made it to some higher ground where I was greeted to a grand view that literally stopped me in my tracks. It was here, beside the flowing water that I set up camp. I knew this time of year the sun was aligned between the mountains but of course the cloud cover would determine if I would see any light at all. On my final night the sunset was greyed out and it rained through the night. I had envisioned this shot in my mind and it truly was the one type of image I’d hoped to take away from here. Needless to say, I was at the mercy of the elements. as always. The following morning I’ll never forget those first few moments shortly after awakening, peering from my tent and seeing the faintest of openings far out on the horizon. I knew what was about to unfold. I’ve never had an experience like this but it’s changed me and my love and respect for wilderness and the preservation of these areas. Thanks for viewing.

Living by the ocean my whole life, it has become a natural and favourite subject of mine to photograph. After many years of getting to know its form, nothing quite prepared me for Iceland’s ‘Diamond Beach’ at Jokulsarlon. Here, various ice pieces and sculptures fall from the nearby glacier and float down the river and out to see. Many pieces wash up on the shore where they adorn the stretches of vast black sand. On this particular morning, this incredibly large sculpture dominated to landscape. Standing about 8ft tall at it’s height, it drew me in immediately however the real challenge was trying to do justice to not only it’s shape but also the relentless swell that surges up here and often claims many cameras. With my boots uncomfortably saturated, I opted to go bare foot in order to get closer to my subject in the hopes of revealing the finer and more turbulent details. By the afternoon she was consumed by the sea, never to be photographed again.

I like to take my time processing and sharing images that mean the most to me. I'll often repost old shots here(like this) just to 'maintain a presence'. That said, I'm currently in the process of adding over 20 new images to my website, a collection of personal favourites captured in the second half of this year. Looking forward to sharing these with you. Also, on a side note, 90% of next years workshops are full, so if you want to get on board a trip, please check my website or email me. Thanks!
