Caretaker of Ta Prohm Wat, a 2.5-acre temple housed within a walled, 12th-century 148-acre complex, Angkor, Cambodia, 1999. Ta Prohm, one of the temples of Angkor, was for centuries a crucible of Hindu, Buddhist and native Khmer culture.

I shot this coal miner in Pul-e-Khumri, capital of Baghlan Province in the north of Afghanistan. Despite the coal dust covering his face, he exudes a sense of dignity and pride. Christopher Kremmer in his book, Carpet Wars, said, "...they are everywhere, these individuals of undaunted humankind, irrepressibly optimistic and proud."

This young girl was on a train which was departing from Chittagong, Bangladesh. Chittagong is Bangladesh's second-largest city and the country's largest port. Many people pass through on their way to the Chittagong Hill Tracts which have breathtaking landscapes with hills, ravines and cliffs covered with dense jungles of bamboo, and tall beautiful waterfalls.

We were invited to dinner at the chief of the villages home in Hajjah, Yemen. The next day we accompanied him and his son who is in the picture to a wedding. He is donning gear worn by many highland males - a head covering, a dagger, and a Kalashnikov rifle. The dagger, called a Jambiya, is a custom in much of Yemen. The rifle he is holding is his fathers and it is customary to fire guns off at weddings.

If you look closely at a tree you’ll notice its knots and dead branches, just like our bodies. What we learn is that beauty and imperfection go together wonderfully." – Matthew Fox

The market square of Chandni Chowk has been the hub of activity in Old Delhi for centuries, each year witnessing the monsoon rains and blistering heat. As rivers run through the streets, passers-by maintain their daily routine and a street-food seller continues to hawk his wares undeterred by the downpour.

Thunderheads form as monsoon rains arrive in Bihar, in northeastern India. The Ganga (Ganges) divides the state into two parts as it flows from west to east. Bihar is India's most flood-prone state with about 75% of its hundred million people affected by the yearly flooding.

An Intha fisherman paddles his boat on Inle Lake in Burma/Myanmar. The Intha fishermen of Inle Lake, a highland fresh water lake, are famous for the way they paddle their boats using their legs. Some Intha people live at the edge of the lake, but others grow vegetables in floating gardens, and live in houses on stilts.

Vessels from around the world end up in ship-breaking yards to be broken down into scrap. The workers reduce these colossal ships to tons of material which is then sold. It is a dirty and dangerous job. These vessels were beached so the workers could begin the dismantling process. This photograph was taken in Karachi, Pakistan.

Temporary pontoon bridges across the Ganges River help facilitate movement of some of the 30 million Hindu devotees who took part in the Kumbha Mela Festival. After going to the Kumbh Mela, Mark Twain wrote, "It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining."

Women in a "laughing club" in Mumbai. Called "Laughter Yoga", the practice is based on the belief that voluntary laughter gives the same psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. Done in groups, the forced laughter soon becomes real and contagious.

The rice terraces of Banaue, Philippines, were designated as a World Heritage Site in 1995. It is believed that they were carved out of the mountains by the Ifugao people, more than two thousand years ago. They demonstrate the creative ability of people to adapt to and thrive in their environment.

A good portrait is one that says something about the person. We usually see parts of ourselves in others, so a good portrait should also say something about the human condition.

Portraits reveal a desire for human connection; a desire so strong that people who know they will never see me again open themselves to the camera, all in the hope that at the other end someone will be watching, someone who will laugh or suffer with them.

Although the dress is dirty and slightly too big, this girl gathers up the material as if she was on the way to a party. The idea of childhood as a time of innocence is a luxury few Afghan children can afford. Young girls are expected to help their mother in her daily chores, leaving little time to play.

Hospitality and tea are very important in the daily life of Afghans. Afghanistan's location on the ancient Silk Routes brought traders carrying tea and silks from China more than 2,000 years ago. Tea is such a staple in Afghanistan that it imports more than ten pounds of tea per person per year. This teahouse (chaikhana) is in Maimana.
