Al-Shaheed Monument, built by Saddam Hussein in 1983, was intended as a memorial to the Iraqi martyrs of the Iran-Iraq war. The monument, a blue dome split in half, stands at 150 foot-high in Iraq's capital of Baghdad, and features an eternal flame in the center. The Iran-Iraq war, started by Saddam, lasted eight years from 1980-1988, and ended with no gains for either side. The brutal war resulted in half a million in casualties combined. Saddam's tactics were the most criticized due to his indiscriminate use of chemical weapons on both Iranians and Iraqi Kurds. During the conflict, Saddam was backed by several other nations including the U.S.

A bull-jumping ceremony is a 3-day long rite of passage in the Hamer tribe in which a boy becomes a man. Once a young man completes the ceremony, he becomes Maza, an accomplished one. If he fails, he will have to wait until the next year to try again.

Happy 100th birthday to John G. Morris, my friend of forty years, and a living legend in the world of photography. After editing Robert Capa's work for Life Magazine taken during D-Day during WWII, he went on to work with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, W. Eugene Smith and scores of photographers from the New York Times, Magnum Photos, The Washington Post, and other important publications.

The world famous Shaolin Monastery is known to many in the West for its association with martial arts, specifically Shaolin Kung Fu. The physical strength and dexterity displayed by the monks is incredible, although they exude a deep serenity.

I photographed this young boy as he walked through barley fields near Kandze, Tibet. Barley is an important crop because it can be grown in the cold temperatures of the Tibetan plateau. It is a food staple that can be roasted and ground into flour.

As temperatures in Cannon Ball, N.D., dropped into the 20s, police in riot gear sprayed activists with a hose mounted atop an armored vehicle and formed a line to prevent them from advancing up the road, according to the Bismarck Tribune. Protesters also reported being pelted with rubber bullets, tear gas and concussion grenades during the standoff, which lasted until late Sunday night, reports the Washington Post. A United Nations human rights expert has accused US security forces of using excessive force against protesters trying to stop an oil pipeline project which runs through sacred land. Law enforcement officials, private security firms and the North Dakota National Guard have used unjustified force to deal with opponents of the Dakota Access pipeline, according to Maina Kiai, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. Some of the 400 people held during the demonstrations had suffered “inhuman and degrading conditions in detention,” Mr. Kiai added. Protesters say they have faced rubber bullets, tear gas, mace, compression grenades and bean-bag rounds while expressing concerns over environmental impact and trying to protect burial grounds and other sacred sites of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Two monks sit on the causeway at Angkor Wat. Located in the northwest part of Cambodia, the complex covers an area of some 200 square kilometers. Built during the Khmer Empire between the ninth and fifteenth centuries, the structures represent the classic period of Khmer art, and are unparalleled in the eastern world.

This is a picture I took of Tony Vaccaro with his iconic image of Sophia Loren from 1959. I had the pleasure to meet Tony at his studio in New York. I discovered to my great surprise that his studio is just across the street from my own. He was one of the great war photographers in WWII. At the time he wasn't a professional photographer, he just happened to be an American soldier with a camera. He often had to develop the film in his helmet. He went on to have an illustrious career photographing for magazines such as Look, Life, and Flair. Thanks to @jessewinter for making this introduction.

One of the most ancient and immediate forms of folk art is the hand print, an ancient graphic mark that I have photographed in countries around the world. In this house in Kamdesh, Afghanistan, a town in the remote Nuristan Province high in the Hindu Kush, the wood-paneled walls are covered with a series of roughly applied impressions

Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, has welcomed back Sharbat Gula. Pakistani security officials escorted Gula overnight from a hospital in Peshawar, where she had been staying since her arrest last month for living illegally in the country, and handed her over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham border. Gula’s deportation comes amid Pakistani pressure to send 2.5 million Afghan refugees back home even though Afghanistan is facing a bloody Taliban insurgency and would struggle to look after so many returnees. “I welcome her back to the bosom of her motherland,” Ghani said as an expressionless Gula stood beside him during a small ceremony at the palace in Kabul. “I’ve said repeatedly, and I like to repeat it again, that our country is incomplete until we absorb all of our refugees.” Ghani promised to provide Gula with a furnished apartment to ensure she “lives with dignity and security in her homeland”. We are overjoyed that Sharbat Gula has now returned to Afghanistan. Our sources are telling us that His Excellency, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, has presented her with an apartment key in the Presidential Palace in Kabul, Afghanistan. This picture shows Mrs. Rula Ghani, the First Lady of Afghanistan, embracing Sharbat Gula. We thank everyone around the world who helped to make this possible.

I took this picture in Peshawar, Pakistan, which is on the Grand Trunk Road which connects Kolkata, India to Kabul, Afghanistan. For more than 2000 years, travelers have walked, ridden, prayed, traded, invaded, escaped, fought, and died along the 1,500 miles of the GT.

IMPORTANT STATEMENT FROM STEVE MCCURRY AND BONNIE MCCURRY V'SOSKE: We would like to unequivocally state the fact, that Mr. Rahimullah Yusufzai, highly respected journalist and an honorable man with an unimpeachable reputation, helped us over the years as we have tried to support Sharbat Gula, known as the Afghan Girl. He has not received the recognition he surely deserves as the man who helped National Geographic and Steve McCurry locate her after fifteen years. We want to correct this situation, by saying that without his assistance, wisdom, and guidance, she would never have been found. It was Mr. Yusufzai, and him alone, who made it possible for her to be discovered in 2002 and photographed again as a wife, mother, and mature woman. Our bookkeeping department sent money intended for Sharbat Gula in error to Mr. Yusufzai, without informing him. We were in a hurry as we wanted to help Sharbat Gula overcome her recent troubles. Due to banking laws and restrictions, that money, in full, has now been returned to our bank account in the US. Mr Yusufzai has not received a penny of that amount and we have 100% confidence that money meant for Sharbat Gula and sent through Mr Yusufzai was delivered to her in full. We are now trying to find other ways to send the money to Sharbat Gula. We send our deepest apologies to Mr. Yusufzai, who has supported Sharbat Gula's family and her extended family for many years. It is the Yusufzai family who has, without receiving any recognition, worked so hard and tirelessly to ensure that Sharbat Gula and her children were cared for and kept safe. Everyone who cares about Sharbat Gula and her future, should thank Mr. Yusufzai and his family for their generous hospitality and selfless support to her and her family.

With utmost delight, I announce that Sharbat Gula is now free from the legal troubles she endured over the past couple of weeks. She soon will also be free from an uncertain life of a refugee as she will be on her way back to her own country as soon as next Monday where she still is a beloved image and a national icon. She will be met by President Ashraf Ghani upon her arrival to welcome her back home and help her with her resettlement. I take this opportunity to thank all those who voiced their support and sympathy to the case of Sharbat Gula. This includes prominent as well as ordinary people within the Government, civil society, Peshawar Court and FIA office, media and the public in large. You all played a significant role resulting in today's good news. - Dr Omar Zakhilwal, Afghanistan Ambassador to Pakistan. Upon arrival, Sharbat will meet President Ghani in Kabul, and will be given the keys to her new house. THANK YOU everyone for your support, your contributions and your concern.

https://goo.gl/pP7TEM November 3, 2016 The Daily Times of Pakistan is reporting on a press conference by the Dr Zakhilwal, the Afghan Ambassador, in an article by reporter Arshad Yusufzai, "bail request was rejected by the court but thankfully she is not in the prison as the authorities have provided her with a hospital room, where she is free to meet her children besides getting treatment for hepatitis C, the disease that had snatched her husband and her young daughter a few years back." We have set up a special fund where 100% of the donations will go towards Sharbat Gula, and other Afghan widows who are attempting to return to Afghanistan. We will now be accepting donations through our non-profit organization, @imagine_asia. You can donate by clicking the link in bio, and hitting the "follow this link" button on the right-hand side.

Sharbat Gula has been the symbol of refugees for decades. Now she has become the face of unwanted migrants. The officials in Peshawar, Pakistan, have denied bail for Sharbat. As a widow, she has endeavored to raise her four children alone. She represents all brave women and men who will endure any pain and hardship to protect the most precious thing they have - their children. We will continue to do everything and anything we can to secure Sharbat's release.

I took this picture in 2002. It is our understanding from good sources in Peshawar, Pakistan, that she will be released tomorrow, Tuesday. We should all continue to press the officials to not only release her, but to treat her and her family with the utmost dignity, care, and respect as she prepares to make many important decisions which will affect her children in so many ways, including the continuation of their education.

We are happy to announce that the Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan has taken an interest in Sharbat Gula's case, and has issued a statement available here: https://www.facebook.com/Dr.Zakhilwal/ We anticipate that her release will occur early next week. THANK YOU to all of you who have raised your voices in support of this wonderful woman, Sharbat Gula, who has been through so much including the bombings which killed her parents, life in a refugee camp, the loss of her beloved husband, and the death of her wonderful daughter.

She represents all brave women and men who will endure any pain and hardship to protect the most precious thing they have - their children. In the past few hours, we have made contact with a prominent human rights attorney in Pakistan, who will take her case. We urge the international community to speak out on her behalf and for the millions of others who simply need a place to live without fear.

Two hours ago, I got word from a friend in Peshawar, Pakistan, that Sharbat Gula has been arrested. We are doing everything we can to get the facts by contacting our colleagues and friends in the area. I am committed to doing anything and everything possible to provide legal and financial support for her and her family. I object to this action by the authorities in the strongest possible terms. She has suffered throughout her entire life, and her arrest is an egregious violation of her human rights. - Steve McCurry

The stairway is narrow and steep as it climbs a 300-foot lava plug crowned by Buddhist temples. The plug rises from the slope of Mount Popa an extinct volcano, where thousands of pilgrims flock each May to a festival honoring a multitude of terrestial spirits called nats. Burma's Buddhists have a healthy respect for the nats, who bestow favors on those who honor them and inflict punishment on non-believers.
