Here's a video of my trip to #LasVegas last month where I painted a large mural on the historic @plazalasvegas in #DTLV, my largest in the city. @dface_official is an artist and friend that I've worked with and painted murals with around the world, so I was very pleased to have my "Cultivate Harmony" piece up with his "Behind Closed Doors" mural. If you’re in New York, you might see the @artinadplaces group's latest installation. I think that art in public space, especially in place of an ad, disrupts the trance of conspicuous consumption that is perpetuated by the constant bombardment of advertising communication that suggests our value and values are determined by the things we purchase. Creative expression as an alternative to advertising or even a critique of advertising gives us a wider and invigorated perspective as well as an understanding that communication can go two ways. My art is usually social and political regardless of who is in the White House, but my concerns and frustrations are amplified by the election of Donald Trump. I joked while Trump was campaigning that his slogan should be “Manifest Density,” a parody of “Manifest Destiny,” which was an embarrassingly egotistical pronouncement by rich white men that it was God’s desire for them to conquer ocean to ocean in the territory that would become the United States. Trump appealed to an uninformed electorate who looked for scapegoats and were driven by most likely one or more of the dark impulses listed in the print. I’m pushing for a future where those impulses have no place and definitely no traction. Let’s move forward, not backward. Thank you to Zane Meyer of @chopemdownfilms for capturing my Corporate Welfare mural in #LasVegas. The message of this art is actually even more relevant today than it was just last fall when I completed it as part of the @lifeisbeautiful festival. With the current administration, we’re witnessing even more power and disproportionate influence that corporations have on politics and policy. Rex Tillerson, our Secretary of State, served as the chairman and chief executive officer of ExxonMobile which is currently the world’s 9th largest company and the fifth largest publicly traded company by market capitalization. Essentially we have the leader of the largest Big Oil company at the helm of the U.S. government’s foreign policy, just one of the dangerous and dysfunctional decisions of our reckless leadership. So why does this matter and how does this art tie into this? Corporate Welfare is my commentary on corporate subsidy. The current campaign finance structure allows for corporations to manipulate politics and it doesn’t take a political pundit to put two and two together that Tillerson and the Trump Administration are very much in the pocket (or pocketbooks) of corporations and specifically the Oil & Gas industry. I wanted to share our eBay policy again for all of the individuals out there who are frustrated. I hear you, and me and my team are working on this. I sympathize with your frustrations and we are working on finding a solution. When there are many people checking out simultaneously, sometimes the print sells out while your sale is in process. I know it’s frustrating but that is a reality of e-commerce and high demand. I always find myself in a tricky spot realizing that some people won’t like it if the price is higher for my work, and some people won’t like it if the edition is higher. The “Drink Crude Oil” print uses torn ad posters as a metaphor for the competing fragmented messages we are all confronted with daily. A lot of our habits are reinforced by the ubiquity and consistency of propaganda around certain products. For example, consuming oil and gas is presented as part of the good life along side drinking Coca-Cola. All of us involved with the #WeThePeople campaign have been overwhelmed and energized by the incredible response to the images we created and distributed physically and virally. The images have continued to proliferate and hold a consistent presence at many of the protests against Trump’s “Muslim ban.” We feel the We The People messages are powerful for all of us who resist fear and bigotry to rally around. The entire project is about activism and is not for profit. Unfortunately, many people are attempting to exploit the popularity of the images. On the one hand, we are happy the images are out in the world, but on the other, we’d prefer to continue the work of the @amplifierfoundation if funds are to be raised. This Church of Consumption print deals with themes I’ve addressed pretty consistently over the years… material obsession, patterns around social currency and status signifiers, and complacency on deeper issues resulting from the perpetual distractions of shallower concerns. If 1984 were written today, I think Big Brother would have a softer touch, encouraging us to enjoy THIS, but pay no attention to THAT. Darker forces certainly benefit from reinforcing the collective psychology that pleasure and status are largely derived from superficial consumption, while a concern for basic human dignity yields no social benefit. It is much easier to ignore the suffering of others when we are fixated on our next purchase. In the future, I’d like to encourage you to consume and submit with more discretion… RIGHT AFTER you purchase this print! Of course I recognize the irony of selling this, but in all seriousness, if this print would be a shallow acquisition and the art and ideas are not significantly meaningful, please don’t buy the print. From Athens to #Berlin to Mexico City to Washington, DC, We The People signs were held high as men and women marched in solidarity at last Saturday’s #WomensMarch. I’m incredibly honored that my art was able to inspire so many people and also function as a vehicle to support women’s rights. I’m emotional and incredibly humbled by this whole experience and thank each and every one of you for supporting this important movement in our culture.
