I did not expect to cry tears of optimism today. Thank you for your beautiful words, @valariekaur **Repost from @cameronrussell - "What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb – but the darkness of the womb? What if our America is not dead, but a country that is waiting to be born. What if the story of America is one long labor." -Valarie Kaur (for the full speech LINK IN BIO) via Groundswell's Facebook page

"Bad Feminist" by @roxanegay74 "We live in a culture that is overly permissive where rape is concerned. While there are certainly many people who understand rape and the damage of rape, we also live in a time that necessitates the phrase 'rape culture.' This phrase denotes a culture where we are inundated, in different ways, by the idea that male aggression and violence towards women is acceptable and often inevitable. As Lynn Higgins and Brenda Silver ask in their book 'Rape and Representation,' 'How is it that in spite (or perhaps because) of their erasure, rape and sexual violence have been so ingrained and so rationalized through their representations as to appear 'natural' and inevitable, to women as to men?' This is an important question, trying to understand how we have come to this. We have also, perhaps, become immune to the horror of rape because we see it so often and discuss it so often, many times without acknowledging or considering the gravity of rape and its effects. We jokingly say things like 'I just took a rape shower' or 'My boss totally just raped me over my request for a raise.' We have appropriated the language of rape for all manner of violations, great and small.... Perhaps we expect gay public figures and other prominent queer people to come out, to stand and be counted, so they can do the work we're unwilling to do to change the world, to carry the burdens we are unwilling to shoulder, to take the stands we are unwilling to make. As individuals, we may not be able to do much, but when we're silent when someone uses the word 'gay' as an insult, we are falling short...There are injustices great and small, and even if we can only fight the small ones, at least we are fighting. Too often, we fail to ask ourselves what sacrifices we will make for the greater good. What stands will we take? We expect *role models* to model the behaviors we are perfectly capable of modeling ourselves...We are willing- even anxious- to see prominent figures in a state of helplessness as they sacrifice their privacy for the greater good. How helpless are *we* willing to be for the greater good? That question interests me most." #McGReads

Until midnight tonight, @plannedparenthood will TRIPLE all donations made. This is a great way to fight the current and impending attack on women's rights and health. And is especially necessary for those that are most vulnerable. #PlannedParenthood . Link in bio or here --> ppaction.org/ppgive2016

Repost from @shishi.rose - Today's post via our @womensmarch page: _ *Flint, is a city of 98,310, where 41.6% of residents live below the poverty line and the median household income for those below the poverty line is $24,679. The median household income for the rest of Michigan is $49,087. The city is 56.6% African-American. _ *Historically, the water in the Flint River downstream of Flint has been of poor quality, and was severely degraded during the 1970s, due to "the presence of fecal coliform bacteria, low dissolved oxygen, plant nutrients, oils, and toxic substances." In 2001, the state ordered the monitoring and cleanup of 134 polluted sites within the Flint River watershed. _ *According to a class-action lawsuit, the state Department of Environmental Quality was not treating the Flint River water with an anti-corrosive agent, in violation of federal law. The river water was found to be 19 times more corrosive than water from Detroit, which was from Lake Huron, according to a study by Virginia Tech. _ *Since the water wasn't properly treated, lead from aging service lines to homes began leaching into the Flint water supply after the city tapped into the Flint River as its main water source. _ *Health effects of lead exposure in children include impaired cognition, behavioral disorders, hearing problems and delayed puberty. In pregnant women, lead is associated with reduced fetal growth. Some pregnant women who have been exposed to the contaminated water have miscarried. In everyone, lead consumption can affect the heart, kidneys and nerves. Although there are medications that may reduce the amount of lead in the blood, treatments for the adverse health effects of lead have yet to be developed. _ We March because Reproductive Justice and Women's Rights is more than just abortion. The ability to raise your children in safe places free from violence and environmental racism is also apart of the fight. #WomensMarchOnWashington #WomensMarch

(3/3) From "Under The Affluence: Shaming The Poor, Praising The Rich, and Sacrificing The Future Of America" by #TimWise . This is one of the most important important books that I've read this year. To understand the current economic situation of the United States, including the unbelievable inequality of wealth and how Donald Trump got elected as president, it's imperative that we understand the role that racism has played in keeping poor and working class white and black people divided. And thus, keeping these white folks from realizing that they ultimately have more to be gained in coming together with poor and working class people of color to challenge systems that benefit the the extremely wealthy, (mostly white), elites. The narrative that has been spun by the right, of people of color taking advantage of the meager social support systems that the U.S. has to offer, is central to the right's ability to keep much of its white voter base from embracing systems of social support that are much more prevalent in the vast majority of other developed nations. I can't recommend this book highly enough. A great resource for understanding where we've come from and what we must do to move forward.
