#Regram #RG @unfccc: The arid landscape of Israel’s Negev Desert will look like a futuristic movie in the near future. The country is building the tallest solar thermal tower in the world above its dusty sands. Surrounded by 50,000 mirrors, the 250 meters high tower should be able to produce enough power for about 5% of Israel’s population when it’s concluded. The sunlight will be reflected by the mirrors to a boiler at the top of the tower. The boiler will then be able to convert them and heat water to steam to turn the turbine in a conventional power plant. Thank you President @BarackObama for continuing to protect our planet and preserving #nationalmonuments that recognize America’s civil rights history. #Regram #RG @sierraclub: President Obama has designated new national monuments recognizing the country’s civil rights history -- The Reconstruction Era, Freedom Riders, and Birmingham Civil Rights National Monuments. He also further protected the existing Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument in Oregon and the California Coastal National Monument, celebrating our country's beautiful places. The designations accompany a presidential memorandum to increase diversity and community outreach across land management agencies to help ensure our parks and public lands are more inclusive and welcoming to people from all walks of life. #Regram #RG @everydayclimatechange: Photo by Georgina Goodwin @ggkenya for @everydayclimatechange. Empusel, the name the Maasai call the salty, dusty plains and from which the word ‘Amboseli’ is derived, is about to relish in the first of the rains. The Amboseli basin, a semi-arid, open savannah area of southern Kenya, has experienced extensive changes in habitat since the early 1960's with daily temperatures increasing dramatically at a greater rate than that attributed to global warming. Amboseli has experienced an extensive loss of the trees due to a rising water table and the related rise of the salt layer in the soil, to grazing patterns, to a natural ageing of the woodlands, and to damage from an increasingly resident elephant population now unable to move the distances they used to due to growing human population around the reserve. The temperature changes here are now causing the landscape changes, and to confuse matters the temperature pattern may itself have been caused by the landscape changes. The climate change discussion is as dynamic and as important as ever. #climatechange #globalwarming #ic_landscapes #travel #natgeohub @natgeotravel #desertification #dust #everydayclimatechange #drought #deforestation #trees #colorcrush #horizon #canon #canonphotos #canon5dmarkiii

Click the link in the bio to learn more as one of the 10 largest ever recorded icebergs is about to break away from Antarctica. #Regram #RG @franslanting: Photo by @FransLanting I returned from Antarctica recently where I revisited locations I knew from years before. I was astonished to set foot ashore in places where I expected to find snow and ice and instead found bare rock. Antarctica is melting fast and that will lead to a significant rise in sea levels around the planet. Ultimately, every one of the billions of people who live near a coastline will be affected. The icicles dripping from this iceberg stranded on the edge of Antarctica enabled me to visualize the precarious balance between water, ice, and sun. The invisible component in this delicate equation is all of humanity and the way we are impacting the planet. We can all play a role in making our lifestyles more sustainable and to stem the tide. Stay tuned for more images and stories from Antarctica soon. @natgeo @natgeotravel @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @LeonardoDiCaprio #Antarctica #Ice #ClimateChange #BeforetheFlood

#Regram #RG @amazonwatch: Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon have been protesting for months after a series of oil spills have contaminated land and rivers along the pipeline route. In recent weeks the government finally agreed to talks with the communities, which last week resulted in agreements for the government and pipeline company to clean up the spills and prevent future ones. This is a victory for the indigenous water protectors, but they -- and we -- must remain vigilant to assure that the government fulfills those agreements. #Regram #RG @natgeo: Photo by @edkashi/@viiphoto: A field of crops is covered by plastic bags in California’s Central Valley in December 2016. Prolonged droughts in the Valley have caused extreme weather conditions, damaging crops due to lack of rainfall and absence of moisture in the air. In a recent article posted in cropinsuranceinamerica.org, Doug Benik, a farmer and crop insurance agent explains, “The lack of moisture in the air allows air temperatures to get much colder in the winter and much hotter in the summer.” Due to the much colder temperatures, farmers use different methods for protecting their crops from frostbite, such as covering them with bags. #everydayclimatechange #actonclimate #California #CentralValley #crops #climatechange

#Regram #RG @nytimes: In the Fall, polar bears are everywhere around Kaktovik, an Arctic village home to 260 people. They doze on sand spits, roughhouse in the shallows, pad down the beach and attract hundreds of tourists. At night, the bears sneak into town, staying until the #polarbear patrol chases them off. On the surface, these animals might not look like members of a species facing possible extinction. Many seem healthy and plump — especially in the early fall, when their presence overlaps with the Inupiat village’s whaling season. But the bears in Kaktovik are #climaterefugees, on land because the sea ice they need to hunt seals is receding. The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, and the ice cover is retreating at a pace that startles even those who predicted the decline. Now, bears like this one are going into the winter skinnier, smaller and in poorer condition. In Kaktovik, at least for now, whales are providing alternative source of food. But dead whale is not a polar bear’s preferred cuisine. @joshhaner took this photo while on #nytassignment in Alaska. Visit the link in our profile to read more.

When 'Cecil - the Lion’ was killed, Swedish explorer and adventure activist Johan Ernst Nilson decided to make a change. He hired a group of ex-poachers to cross Serengeti in Tanzania to track down the poachers. Johan and his team hiked among animals like lions, rhinos and elephants for 500 km and managed to destroy 88 traps to save endangered animals in Africa. The project was called 'Not a walk in the park'. Photo: Filip Cederholm @johanernst #adventureactivist #notawalkinthepark #serengeti #stoppoaching

#Regram #RG @everydayclimatechange: Photo by Georgina Goodwin @ggkenya for @everydayclimatechange. This image of an Amhara boy and his horse in barren fields that should be full of wheat and teff was taken in Wollo 600kms north of Ethiopia's capital Addis in 2008 when the entire region suffered major drought as both the years' rains failed. Ethiopia continues to face the same issues of failed rains and are currently suffering the worst drought in 30 years exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon. A recent climate change study in the Horn of Africa finds that the land is drying out at an unusually fast pace as a result of soaring greenhouse gas emissions. Associate professor at the University of Arizona and lead author of the study Jessica Tierney said in a statement in the IBTimes, "Given the scale of threats in Africa and across the world, studying the hyper-local impacts of climate change will be critical to helping communities adapt and prepare". In a country where more than eight in ten people depend on rain-fed agriculture, the drought is having a significant impact and the Ethiopian government estimates that more than 9 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2016. #climatechange #globalwarming #everydayclimatechange #ethiopia #documentary #photojournalism #climate #visualsoflife #ethiopia #GlobalClimateChange2015 #News #environment #famine

#Regram #RG @natgeotravel: Photo by @FransLanting // This polar bear mother and its cub appear to be in good condition. They’ve developed thick winter coats that will keep them warm during the months ahead, but changing ice conditions in the Arctic are posing huge challenges to their survival. Polar bears need sea ice—that’s where they hunt for seals. And every year the extent of the Arctic’s sea ice cap is shrinking. How much longer before we reach a tipping point? Follow me @FransLanting to see more images from the high Arctic.

#Regram #RG @amazonwatch: The Kichwa community of Sarayaku in Ecuador live in close harmony with their Amazon rainforest home. But explosives left on their territory during oil exploration by a private company put them in harms way, and new oil concessions further threaten them and their rainforest home. Today, Sarayaku leaders took their case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, denouncing the government's noncompliance with a 2012 Court ruling ordering it to work with the community to remove the explosives and to thoroughly consult with them before issuing any new concessions.

Great news from an #LDF project in Sumatra w/ partner @World_Wildlife. #Regram #RG @World_Wildlife: One of the last great stands of rain forest in the deforestation hotspot of the Indonesian island of Sumatra has welcomed an exciting new addition: a baby female orangutan. The infant is the first orangutan born in the Thirty Hills conservation concession since WWF and its partners began managing the 100,000-acre forest in 2015. Violet, one of dozens of orangutans reintroduced into Bukit Tigapuluh National Park—a region commonly known as Thirty Hills—is the new mother, and both mom and baby appear healthy. The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), an international conservation organization committed to preserving wild lands and animals, has worked to reintroduce orangutans like Violet into Thirty Hills since 2001. Most of the orangutans were rescued from the illegal pet trade and placed in the society’s ‘jungle school.’ There, they learned the skills they need to survive before heading into the wild. Around 160 orangutans now live in Thirty Hills.

An angry sea continues attempting to reclaim the coastline in Pondicherry despite a boulder sea wall built after the 2004 Asian Tsunami. Pondicherry, India. It is not the seismically-induced tsunami, however, the poses the ongoing threat to the coastlines of Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu, which surrounds this former-French enclave. Climate change-induced sea rise and more intense cyclones that warmer sea waters regularly unleash on this coast means that many coastal villages are beginning to pull back from the sea as homes are undermined by eroded beaches. #climatechange #globalwarming #risingseas #cyclones #tropicalstorms #warmseas #India #TamilNadu #Pondicherry

#Regram #RG @everydayclimatechange: As 2016 draws to a close, and it increasingly looks like we're on track for a record high average temperature for the planet this year, according to the World Meteorological Organization, I (@danielbeltraphoto) think it is important to be reminded of just what the impacts are. The melting of our polar ice caps, such as in this photo, will have a profound and destructive impact on human civilization in both the near and distant future. Climate change is real and it is happening right now.

#Regram #RG @franslanting: Photo by @FransLanting “Iceberg Cathedral” Every iceberg tells a story. Each one is a snapshot of water frozen in time. This gigantic one, afloat in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea, looked like a turquoise cathedral with soaring archways and fluted columns sculpted by the corroding force of waves. When a group of chinstrap penguins came into view, they added reality to a surreal scene—their moment aboard the blue berg as fleeting as the life of the ice itself. Ninety percent of all ice on Earth is contained on Antarctica, and as our planet warms, glaciers dislodge an ever-larger portion of it each year into the Southern Ocean, where most icebergs melt away in a single season. The new NatGeo Channel documentary about climate change by Leonardo DiCaprio, “Before the Flood," does a great job of summing up the issues and specifying solutions. You can watch it online or on the channel.
