@mattsegal blows centuries of dust from an ancient Bon manuscript in Upper Mustang, Nepal. Our interdisciplinary team of climbers, archeologists, and and scientists were exploring the cave in search of human remains. The study of the remains and what was found with them would ultimately lead to a more comprehensive understanding of a forgotten leg of the Silk Road and a small piece of the bigger story of human migration and trade. Ice skates of a bygone era hang unmoved on Hayes Island, Franz Josef Land, Russia. The scientific stations on the island were abandoned almost entirely after a fire in 2001.

A leap from fence to flatbed. I've never known such a hard-working group of people than those I meet on the random dirt roads that spin off into seeming nothingness and nowhere, #Montana. Shot #onassignment for @natgeo for the Yellowstone issue, May '16.

A snow petrel flies above snow drifts in the Wohlthat Mountains in Antarctica's Queen Maud Land. The landscape feels like it is from before time...something both quiet and harsh. I've never quite as exposed as I did on this trip. The Petrels were the only other life besides the four of us...and their curiosity towards us seemed limitless.

A curious and hungry polar bear on Rudolf Island. With climate change and receding arctic ice, the seals that polar bears have always relied on as a food source become more and more scarce. Our impacts go so far beyond what we see in our day to day lives, affecting every thread in the tapestry of our global ecosystem. Not your average canine companion, Leoti is a rescued Arctic Wolf now living in MT. Our history with wolves is one of such tragic misunderstanding and irony. In all likelihood, it was humans who domesticated and crafted them into all the breeds of dogs we see today and yet have actively worked to destroy the 'ancestral' species. As Karen E. Lange wrote in "Wolf to Woof" in @natgeo: About 12,000 years ago hunter-gatherers in what is now Israel placed a body in a grave with its hand cradling a pup. Whether it was a dog or a wolf can’t be known. Either way, the burial is among the earliest fossil evidence of the dog’s domestication. Scientists know the process was under way by about 14,000 years ago but do not agree on why. Some argue that humans adopted wolf pups and that natural selection favored those less aggressive and better at begging for food. Others say dogs domesticated themselves by adapting to a new niche—human refuse dumps. Scavenging canids that were less likely to flee from people survived in this niche, and succeeding generations became increasingly tame. According to biologist Raymond Coppinger, "All that was selected for was that one trait—the ability to eat in proximity to people.” At the molecular level not much changed at all: The DNA makeup of wolves and dogs is almost identical. It’s more than a little ironic then that it’s the proximity of wolves to human interests that led to their near extinction. #natgeo #natgeocreative #thephotosociety #dogs #wolves #wolf #wolfdog #rescuedog #montana

@renan_ozturk and the long walk home. Seen here on day 41 of our expedition to Northern Myanmar and after retreating just shy of the summit of Hkakabo Razi, the realization that we still had to walk 150 miles through the jungle was not the most welcome thought. // Insta retrospective #natgeoinspires

Angola's capital city of Luanda is one of the most expensive cities in the world and it's developing at an astronomical rate. With elections slated for 2017 and a standing president that has been in some seat of power for decades, the transition of power will be important to watch. Angola's future has the potential to be extremely bright as it is one of the most resource rich economies in Africa. Shot on assignment for @natgeo profiling the source of the Okavango Delta's water in the Angolan highlands. The team, lead by Steven Boyes PhD traveled over 1,200 miles by Mekoro doing the first descent of the Cuito river and mega transect of the Okavango's source, its outlet in the delta, and its ultimate end in Makgadikgadi Pans. Insta retrospective for the new @NatGeo Instagram book and museum exhibit.

The continued process of learning to fail gracefully. @renan_ozturk reversing the steps after retreating from the point of snow to the right of his left elbow. Close....oh so close...but this isn’t horseshoes or hand-grenades...this is climbing. Sure, it’s the journey. But the summit matters too. I suppose you are forced to take a harder look in failure. But win, lose, or draw, it’s always worth it. // Insta retrospective for the newly released @natgeo Instagram book. Info at link in profile. #natgeoinspires

Dear @realdonaldtrump, Happy Thanksgiving! Congratulations on your recent election as president elect. As an American, I'm proud to be a part of a system that embraces a system of free elections and governance that has made you my president-elect. I didn't vote for you, but that's what "makes America great...". You will be my president and I accept and honor that pillar of our democracy. Today, you spoke about unity. You've spoken about it since the night you were elected. Its a radical departure from your campaign, but I get that. Running is different than governing and I'm certain that crash course is horrifying. It would be for anyone. It's a big deal. You are president...and honestly, I'm psyched for you. Now it's time for you to embody unity. Over half the voting country didn't want you as our leader and many are scared. Your rhetoric on the campaign trail was divisive enough that many don't trust anything you say. So today, while we give thanks (and let's not forget the roots of this holiday either), can I ask you, implore you...hell, I'll beg you...please speak out directly, by name to the hate groups that are wreaking havoc in your name. America is yours to govern now and I will accept that...but PLEASE, address the hate that has sprung up in your wake and in your name. Make us feel like Americans, not different 'breeds' of humans. I implore you! Call out the BS. Those who are violent against other Americans that are 'different' than them flies defiantly and with gross misunderstanding in the face of this day, let alone this country. Call them out, by name...denounce their hate and follow through on your promise of law and order. Freedom of speech is everyone's right, but violence and hatred only divides us further. You are now the face of us, of me, of our history and future. Ideology aside, denounce hatred and be the leader we all need...the leader we elected. @realdonaldtrump this is your moment. Name and denounce the David Dukes and the white supremacists. Call them out on their inherent misunderstanding of American values. Disavow their values. You spoke of unity President Trump...and so I implore you, as my president, unite!

Joe Sertich returns from a long day of prospecting and fossil excavation in the Kaiparowits through a sandstone slab filled with hoodoos on assignment for @natgeo profiling Laramidia and the Kaiparowits formation of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah. Landscapes like this always move me...they seem to have secrets and answers hidden in them. Maybe because my parents took me there as a child, or maybe because there is some residual ancient wisdom locked in the sandstone, but no other place on the planet has the same draw to me as does the does the American Southwest. It’s a good place to get lost... // Insta retrospective to celebrate the release of the new @natgeo book of your favorite Instagrams. Link in profile. #natgeoinspires

Life, in some ways, might just all boil down to sharing. It's strange to indulge in the idea that we actually all NEED each other...and I mean ALL of us. The onus of the planets care has naturally fallen upon the only species that has the capacity to destroy it. It's on us. We are the stewards and it is our responsibility to share. Share ourselves. Share our convictions. Share our opinions. Share our spoils. It is on us to share that which we care about with others so that we may have a fuller understanding of one another and hopefully develop a deeper sense of compassion. The dust is settling and it is time to look around us and take a hint from that big beautiful planet...we need to find ways to work together...to come to the preverbal watering hole of our self inflicted issues with respect. I might be wrong (I often am), but I think we might surprise ourselves if we learn how to be together rather than be apart. Zebra and elephants illustrate how easy it is to get along.
