"The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press." "If this work can contribute in any way toward proving this, and at the same time arouse the conscience of the American people to a demand for justice to every citizen, and punishment by law for the lawless, I shall feel I have done my race a service." #idabwells - Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, more commonly known as Ida B. Wells, was an African-American journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, feminist, Georgist, and an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement. She was one of the founders of @naacp in 1909 #wcw

So inspired by @mistyksnow4senate - an incredible reminder to all of us that if you don't like what you see in your government, run for office!!! We have the power to change things. It might not happen as quickly as we hope, but it can happen. Go Misty!!!! #wcw Bio from her website: "Born in Salt Lake City in 1985, Misty K. Snow is a Utah native who has lived her entire life in Salt Lake County and has a strong connection to this state and its people. She is part of the new millennial generation that recently become one of the largest voting blocks in Utah and the nation. A cashier at a grocery store and raised in a lower income family, Misty understands the needs of working people and their families. She is concerned by the degree of income inequality in this country: particularly how it disproportionately impacts women, people of color, and the LGBT community. Misty values love and compassion and believes that these values are Utah values. She wants to stand up for the working class families of Utah, and help them enjoy the economic prosperity that they deserve. Misty K. Snow represents the future of both our state and our nation, and is set to become one of the leaders of her generation." #shepersisted

#Repost @shishi.rose with @repostapp ・・・ Today would have been Sandra Bland's 30th birthday. Bland was an activist who used social media as a platform to talk about the racial issues that plagued her community. She made various videos about being a black woman, loving her natural hair, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement. On April 8th, three months before her murder, Bland posted a tweet that spoke out against racial violence that read: "AT FIRST THEY USED A NOOSE, NOW ALL THEY DO IS SHOOT" . On July 15th 2015 Bland was found murdered in a Texas jail cell after being arrested over a minor traffic transgression. . It's important to be reminded that racial violence and police brutality are a major component in the fight for Women's Rights. Black women are routinely murdered and sexually assaulted by law enforcement. Here's some homework--educate yourself about these women and their stories. Maleatra Montanez, Jannie Ligons who was one of 12 Black women raped by one officer, Korryn Gaines, Tanisha Anderson, Rekia Boyd, and 7 year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones. . We remember Sandra Bland today, on her birthday for her bravery and her voice. She gives me the courage to fight without fear because as Audre Lord said, "When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." #SandraBland #BlackLivesMatter #sayhername

Thank you @aclu_nationwide for creating an app that allows us to report injustices. Please download the version for your state. From their site: "Mobile Justice is an easy way to record and report interactions with law enforcement. All footage and reports submitted through this app will be sent immediately to your local ACLU affiliate." Love, #notapaidprotester

"I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified, because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We've been taught that silence would save us, but it won't." "I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood." "When I dare to be powerful - to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." Thank you #audrelorde

Sarah Breedlove (December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919), known as Madam C. J. Walker, was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a political and social activist. Eulogized as the first female self-made millionaire in America, she became one of the wealthiest African American women in the country, "the world's most successful female entrepreneur of her time," and one of the most successful African-American business owners ever. Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women through Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, the successful business she founded. Walker was also known for her philanthropy and activism. She made financial donations to numerous organizations and became a patron of the arts. Villa Lewaro, Walker’s lavish estate in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, served as a social gathering place for the African American community. #wcw

"My name is Valerie Complex. I am a writer, military veteran, and intersectional feminist. I believe as women we cannot achieve full solidarity without INTERSECTIONALITY. More times than I can count, I have been asked to let go of intersectionality in order to unite under the banner of united womanhood. This isn't something women of color can afford to do. The idea that all women are united is a facade. There is much more work to do. Now is the time for those who aren't a part of marginalized communities to LISTEN when women of color are explaining their struggles and experiences to you — it is time for you to internalize! By keeping quiet, you will be surprised at what you learn. If you want to know more, ask. The empty promises of solidarity fall on deaf ears because the actions are contrary to what is said. How can you say you believe in solidarity when you stand silent as WoC are brutalized by racism (verbal and systemic)? THIS IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP! Women of color are tired of putting in the work while others reap the benefits. They are sick of the disregard and the disrespect from your friends and family while you hang your head low because you’re too scared to check your peers. Until people start speaking up and showing us they mean business, we will be unmoved and disinclined to contribute to the larger cause." NOTE: I will be including links to Valerie's articles with deeper info on this subject in insta story.

I make movies as a form of activism. I believe we learn from what we see in our leaders. I'm proud to play Mason Weaver in @kongskullislandmovie because she represents the many journalists who risk their lives everyday to share with us the truth. Weaver leads with compassion and believes that unity cannot be obtained through aggression. I'm excited to share this film with you. And in the meanwhile I'm thrilled to have this platform as a way to connect us. Let's work together. Lets be open to learning from each other.
